Dimitrios Dorian Kokiousis
Biography
Dimitrios is an autodidact multi-instrumentalist from Athens – Hellas.
He took his first steps on the path of music in his teenage years, playing guitar and singing. Formal musical education was not available at the time; instead, intuition and imagination opened the way to the long road of learning.
“Within the family of Percussion, I found my deepest calling and the noblest vehicle for expressing my musical unrest. To my surprise, I found an instinctive inclination and response to rhythm and all things percussive. This became the ground upon which my desire to improvise was born.”
In 1994 he moved to Australia and by late 1996 he began studying drums & percussion and focused largely on the asymmetrical rhythms of Hellenic music.
Since that time, he has been fortunate to have performed in a range of musical situations: from Heavy & Progressive Rock, Free-improvisation groups, to Ethnic Jazz, Modern Percussion Ensembles, Classical Orchestra, as well as various World Music Percussion Ensembles: Japanese Taiko ensemble, Caribbean Steel Pan Ensemble, Brazilian Percussion Ensemble and more.
As a multi-instrumentalist, he has frequently performed across Europe, as well as in Australia and the USA.
In 2006 Dimitrios began working in Germany and in 2008 was invited to collaborate with trumpet player/composer Markus Stockhausen.
This collaboration has seen them presenting original compositions, improvisation workshops and in September 2009 the highly anticipated performances of Goldstaub, Treffpunkt, Intensitaet and Unbegrenzt by the late Karheinz Stockhausen – the very first public performances of these controversial works.
Their new ensemble ETERNAL VOYAGE is founded on improvised, intuitive music that fuses elements of World Music, Jazz and Classical Music and brings together musicians from around the globe.
