Sergio Rojas
Biography
Composer, performer and poet Sérgio Rojas was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1960 and released his first album, Ovnis no óbvio, in 1987. The back cover was signed by Brazilian music icon and bossa nova creator Antonio Carlos Jobim, who wrote:
“It is impossible to label Sérgio Rojas’s music. This is a very good thing, since music is not meant to be labelled. It should be listened to and enjoyed... if it is good. I listened to Sergio's work and enjoyed it! I enjoyed it because it is bold, creative, and at the same time serious and professional, with a very Brazilian touch. And this is what our music has been in need of.” Tom Jobim
Jobim captured the essence of Rojas’s music: creative and without labels, music where the boundaries between popular and classical dissolve in contagious singularity. Other luminaries of Brazilian music have also been praising of Rojas’s work, including Cláudio Santoro and Guerra-Peixe ― his teacher of harmony, composition, orchestration, counterpoint, and fugue. His former guitar teacher, Turíbio Santos, invited him to join the Rio de Janeiro Guitar Orchestra, with which he recorded an album in 1984.
Rojas co-produced his second album, Éra (1990), with Jacques Morelembaum, with the participation of musician Jurim Moreira and singer Ná Ozzetti, among others. Radio Latina, in Paris, voted it one of the best albums of 1991. Two years later, in the same city, Rojas personally presented Umberto Eco with both albums and months later Eco gave him the following handwritten compliment: “Dear Sérgio, thank you for your albums. I was enchanted! They are excellent! Umberto Eco”
In 2000, Rojas finished Microinfinitos, his third and most experimental album, recorded and mixed at the Groupe de Recherches Musicales in Paris (where he lived for 3 years and, among other activities, attended composition courses by Pierre Boulez) and mastered in Germany. This CD boasts the participation of one of Europe’s greatest living musicians: trombonist Vinko Globokar. Rojas has also had scores published by Editions Henry-Lemoine and authored four books of poetry between 1980 and 1990: Arquitetura do Perigo, Liquidificador de Tudo, Vozes do Avesso and Improviso para Silêncio e Sopros, with introductions by renowned Brazilian authors.
Sergio Rojas has staged shows in many important venues and his work has been featured in leading media sources since the beginning of his career.
