Javier Infante

Biography

Born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (1974), Javier Infante is one of the most outstanding Canary Islands artists of his generation. He began studying Canary Island's folk music at the age of ten, continuing afterwards at the Music Conservatory of Las Palmas, where his teachers were Fernando Bautista and Carlos Oramas. He completed his studies at the conservatory with the highest qualifications, and finished his training at the “Musicians Institute” in Hollywood, USA.

He has given many concerts in Spain, France, Africa, Holland, Poland, USA etc., sharing the stage with artists such as Nguyen Le, Vincent Amigo, David Russel, Paulo Bellinati, Take 6, Herbie Hancock, Tuck & Patti, Carlinhos Brown, Lee Ritenour,Ivan Lins, Bela Flecks, and others.

He has participated in several masterclasses given by professors such as Manuel Barruecos, Andrew York, Scott Tennant, Hubert Kappel, Roland Dyens, David Russell, Paulo Bellinati, Zoran Dukic, Scott Henderson, Mike Stern.

In 2003, he took part in an intuitive improvisation workshop given by the Paul Winter Consort. Infante's concept was originally very close to American jazz, but he was impressed and convinced by their new sound concept of improvisation.

As a composer and musical investigator, his works have been required pieces for classical guitar in international competitions. He has composed music for commercials and soundtracks.

He has recorded three albums as a producer and composer. Important European jazz collaborations include working with artists such as Markus Stockhausen, Kike Perdomo, Llibert Fortuny, Nantha Kumar, Ivan Martin, and others.

In 2007 he met trumpeter Markus Stockhausen, and invited him to participate in a concert held at the Conservatory of Music of Las Palmas in duo format. As a result of the great friendship and mutual respect, Markus recorded Infante's latest album at Ciudad de mar in Las Palmas. In the same year, Infante was part of a group created by the renowned saxophonist Union Kike Perdomo and the percussionist Hindu Nantha Kumar, who recorded an album for the label 96Kmusic.

In summer 2008, Infante traveled to France to contact Hervé Prudent, one of the largest European luthiers, and proposed the creation of a new instrument inspired by the saz, guitar and bass. This XXI-century instrument, the KAA, is related to the aboriginal culture of the Canary Islands. “This instrument is a mixture of two cultures, east and west. It is my way of creating a united world with two sounds”.

Infante teaches guitar at the Music Conservatory of Las Palmas, and continues to study intuitive music.

He has explored many musical languages, and these are reflected in his style today: A unique synthesis of classical, jazz and ethnic music.
